Veneers Q & A

What Are the Different Types of Veneers?

There are different types of veneers. Veneers can be made that cover only the front surface of the tooth, or they can be designed to cover the tooth’s entire surface. The newest addition to the veneer family is known as a“snap on” veneer. Snap on veneers are made of extremely hard resin and can be worn whenever the patient desires. They are easily removed and will not alter how a person eats or speaks. Surface and complete veneers are normally bonded directly to the tooth and are considered to be permanent. Permanent veneers will last for several years without an extensive level of care.

What Materials Are Used to Create Veneers?

Veneers are made from several different types of materials. Porcelain veneers are extremely strong and durable and may look more like a person’s real teeth. Composite veneers are made from hard resins and plastics that are blended along with the right amount of color to ensure the tooth will match those next to it. Porcelain veneers are much more expensive than composites but are more durable and will last longer and are less susceptible to staining and discoloration. Ceramic is also commonly used in the creation of veneers. Like porcelain, it is durable and will appear similar to a person’s original teeth.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Veneers?

Individuals who have generally healthy teeth and maintain good oral health are the best candidates for veneers. Veneers are often considered if a person’s teeth are not of average color or size. Many people consider veneers if their teeth have been badly stained due to smoking, alcohol use or certain types of medications that can have an impact on the teeth. In most cases, veneers are considered to be permanent, and the process cannot be reversed once it has been used. To attach the veneer to the surface of the tooth, much of the enamel has to be removed so the bond will remain strong and intact. It is important to consider all of the options before deciding on a final solution.
