Dr. Joseph Hwang is a dentist who specializes in both cosmetic dentistry as well as corrective procedures, including the use of fillings and crowns. The dentist and his staff serve the residents of Livermore, California and nearby towns and neighborhoods.
Fillings are made with many different types of materials. For many years, silver amalgam was used to fill cavities. While it is still in use, some patients have experienced side effects that have caused many dentists to opt for using fillings that are not made from mercury or silver. Gold fillings are extremely expensive but are common in certain areas. The most widely used material at this time is a composite resin that turns into a hard plastic that can be tinted to match the color of the teeth. Clear sealants are also used if the cavity is extremely small and located among the crevices at the top of the tooth.
Silver amalgam fillings are made using a combination of many metals, including mercury, silver, tin, copper and zinc. While ingesting mercury can be toxic, its use as an ingredient in amalgam does not allow it to enter the body directly. Silver amalgam fillings are considered safe by the FDA and can be used in adults and children who are over the age of 6 years. While reactions to silver amalgam are rare, dentists may choose to use other materials if the patient prefers them. Many patients opt for the composite resin fillings because they blend in with the color of their natural teeth and are less noticeable.
Sealants are a plastic composite material that can be either clear or white, depending on where it is being used. Color can be added so that the plastic matches the exact color of the natural tooth, and the filling will be virtually unnoticeable. Sealants are often used to coat the tops of molars, especially in patients that have deep crevices and fissures. Sealants can also be used to cover teeth that have small cracks or that have been eroded by high levels of acid either from the stomach or due to extremely acidic foods being included in the diet. Sealants will eventually wear away over time and may have to be reapplied every few years.
