Dental Implants Q & A

Who Is a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?

A good candidate for dental implants is someone who has generally healthy teeth, but for some reason has one or two missing. Accidents or injuries that result in tooth loss can result in a large hole along the gum line. With the tooth missing, those on either side will tend to shift toward the opening because the support that originally held them in place is no longer there. Implanting a small metal rod with a crown attached to it will help form an abutment that will stabilize the teeth on either side. This will prevent shifting and allow a person’s bite to remain intact and in alignment.

How Long Will a Dental Implant Last?

The titanium or metal rod is meant to be permanent. Once the tooth’s original root has been removed, the implant is gently screwed down into the jawbone. This allows new bone tissue to grow around it and firmly hold it in place. The crown or upper portion of the tooth can be made of any number of materials. Gold and porcelain are considered to be the strongest and will last the longest without being damaged by average wear and tear. Crowns made of ceramic and composite resins or plastics are also considered to be extremely durable but may not last as long as the others. Composite crowns may need to be replaced every five to 10 years, depending on their level of wear.

Do Dental Implants Need Special Care?

In most cases, dental implants do not need any type of special care. Just like other teeth, they should be thoroughly checked at a patient’s yearly exam. While the implants are considered to be permanent, crowns may need to be replaced every few years if they become chipped or begin to show excessive amounts of wear and tear. Gold crowns are the most durable. Porcelain crowns may not begin to show wear for several years. Composite crowns, on the other hand, are made of a hard plastic resin that will begin to wear away over time. Doctors recommend cleaning the crowns just as a patient would clean their other teeth and continue to have them checked at each annual exam.
