Dental Cleaning Q & A

What Health Conditions Can a Dental Cleaning Identify?

Yearly dental cleanings can identify a wide variety of health problems outside of the mouth. An annual dental cleaning can indicate a person may have other health issues, including diabetes, poor heart health, and stomach or digestive problems. Individuals who have acid reflux may have teeth that look as if they are eroding. Bleeding gums or small lesions that won’t heal or completely go away may be an indicator of diabetes or oral cancer. During an annual dental exam, the dentist and hygienist will pay close attention to the teeth, gums and other areas of soft tissue. They will be looking for any abnormalities that may indicate potential health problems in other areas of the body.

How Often Should a Person Have Their Teeth Cleaned?

Dentists recommend that patients have their teeth cleaned at least twice a year. From small children to individuals who wear dentures on a daily basis, the annual dental cleaning and screening procedure is a way for dentists to help protect the teeth and soft tissues of the mouth. It is also used to make sure no other abnormalities are present that can indicate other health conditions. Patients who have problems with their teeth due to medications or certain illnesses may need to be seen more frequently. A thorough cleaning helps to protect the enamel of the teeth from being damaged by plaque and tartar that build up on the surface of the teeth along the gum line.

How Long Does a Dental Cleaning Take?

Most dental cleanings take approximately an hour to complete, depending on how busy the dentist is and whether or not X-rays or other procedures are being performed. Once the patient is taken back to the chair, the hygienist will begin to check the mouth and take any notes. She will begin to clean the teeth and perform any tests that are required. Once the teeth are cleaned, the dentist will come in and evaluate the teeth, looking for any cavities, chips or breaks, and possible issues that are found. The dentist will go over the notes of the hygienist and discuss the findings with the patient. The hygienist will apply a fluoride-based treatment, if necessary, and other appointments will be made as needed, and the patient will be allowed to go home.
